Hitachi Aims for Plasma TV Profit, Raises Output Goal

After hitting a few rough spots in its flat-panel TV business, Hitachi is looking to spring back to life with increased production of plasma TVs.  The company will double 42" plasma screen production by the end of next year to 200,000 per month and will :

``It is crucial that we time our new products ahead of major events,' Ebata said. ``My biggest challenge is whether our sales strategy will be strong enough to compete with bigger rivals on a global scale.'

Out of Japan's three biggest plasma display TV makers, only Matsushita is making money in the business. The Panasonic-brand maker, which is also the biggest seller worldwide, in September opened the world's biggest plasma factory.
