Google introduces updated desktop, other products

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California - Google Inc. (Nasdaq: - ) introduced an upgraded version of its Google Desktop software that incorporates a variety of other Google applications, marking a stepped-up competition with Microsoft Corp.'s Windows software.

Executives speaking to reporters at the company's Mountain View, Calif., headquarters also introduced a range of new products including the ability for any Google user to analyze search trends and compare them to other search trends.

The company also introduced Google Notebook, a simple, but sophisticated text and graphical application that allows users to keep notes, or automatically save searches or Web site addresses.

It also said it plans to offer a more focused way to search Google for specific types of health and medical information.
